The following is a screed about the Yankees payroll. If you are a Yankees fan uninterested in a screed about the payroll, don't read it. You won't enjoy it. Go out, buy a championship T-shirt, reminisce about this great team, enjoy the victory. I'm telling you: Don't read it.(Looking at this and my last blog post, it's clear I have to move on from baseball and my hatred for the Yankees...)
As for the rest of you: The following is a screed about the Yankees payroll. I rarely write about it because it's like writing about the heat in Phoenix. ... But with the Yankees winning the World Series and then talking about how it showed the team's character, well, yeah, I thought maybe this once.

The Yankees Payroll
Joe Posnanski wrote a good post about the Yankees payroll. It's something all of us non-Yankees fans know and complain about, but even as a fan of the high-spending Red Sox I can't help but agree when he writes "You have one team (and only one team) playing the video game on cheat-mode."

Capturing the Cemetery
There's a cemetery down a street that we really enjoy visiting. It's old, picturesque, and has some great old trees. It's very peaceful and relaxing to stroll around or just hang out under them. (Sidenote: we might accidentally be raising some "odd" kids who like cemeteries: often when we drive by one, they often exclaim "We should visit that cemetery sometime!")

I've taken a lot of photos there but I have yet to capture the feeling the place has on me, and I was starting to wonder if it was possible to ever really do it. But this weekend I was playing around with Lomo effects in Photoshop, and I liked the effect it had on one of my recent cemetery photos. I'm not quite there as far as taking "the" photo yet, but I like that I'm making some headway.

Apple Good, Yankees Bad
Behind the Mac nerdery I enjoy on Daring Fireball is a typical Yankee fan: cocky and annoying.
Update: Greg Knauss created a helpful Grease Monkey script to "fix" Daring Fireball this time of year: Damned Fireball.

Smarter Smart Playlists in iTunes
A new site (new to me, thanks to Daring Fireball), Finer Things in Mac, pointed out that iTunes 9 gives you more control over your smart playlists:
Smart Playlists in iTunes 9 have become smarter. They now offer more granular, nested control over rules for collecting content.I've had some pretty complex playlists in my iTunes, using multiple Smart Playlists to get to a single Really Smart Playlist; this now makes my life easier.

Is it Different Than Regular Ping Pong?
Random thoughts from 25-35 year olds (via jchausse) had some pretty funny things in the list.
Also, it had the third "beer pong" reference I've heard in three days (the others being during a visit to my brother's new house and the latest episode of This American Life). The sad thing is I don't even know what beer pong is, which should tell you what a quiet college life I led.
There is a great need for sarcasm font.
It really pisses me off when I want to read a story on CNN.com and
the link takes me to a video instead of text.
Whenever someone says "I'm not book smart, but I'm street smart",
all I hear is "I'm not real smart, but I'm imaginary smart".
That's enough, Nickelback.

"Moments"
I watched this video on the train last night (via the Radio Lab podcast) and thought it was very cool, not to mention more moving than I thought it would be:

Flip Flop Fly Ball is kind enough to provide a public service to the younger generation of baseball cap wearers: Ballcap sticker removal provides the instructions needed for removing the sticker from your new hat. Thanks Flip Flop Fly Ball!

Note to Self: Be More Like Ben
Buzz Andersen on Benjamin Franklin's Daily Schedule:
When you're a person who works alone, and whose fortunes are completely dependent on your own day-to-day productivity, it can be very easy to fall into the trap of working all the time... Franklin's plan is an inspiration to me because it reminds me why I went down the tough road of being an indie developer in the first place: to live a more balanced, reflective life.I think I need to try harder to take a page from Franklin's playbook. It took a while after going out on my own to not work all the time and get into a good work/life schedule. But lately I've been slipping and working too much, and I think it's time to reign that in...
